George Carlin. all material review

George Carlin is my favorite comedian of all time. If George Carlin would be politician, he would be also my favourite candidate. Carlin belongs to the same type of group of comedians where are Bill Hicks and Richard Pryor – the best part of their work is social criticism rather than comedy itself. Of course George Carlin is funny, but the most enjoyable thing in his work is sharp thinking and evaluation of things that according to his perception are nonsense.

Since humor is something that develops in its intelligence with cosmic speed, I would recommend to watch his material starting from early 1990’s. Everything, that has been created before, seems too naïve to be funny, although he is on of exceptional comedians whose material I find funny below 2000’s. In this context it is interesting that in Carlin’s last performances his material has turned in completely opposite extreme – in some moments his speech on particular subject is just pure observational and “conclusional” criticism, which lasts even couple of minutes without any laugh from the side of audience. However it does not make his material less enjoyable.

It is hard to imagine how Carlin’s material is perceived by conservative people. It is hard because from one side Carlin’s speech consists of quite complicated smart structure of words with erudite outlook, which makes his humor very intelligent, from the other side Carlin’s use of rude language and aggressive criticism against so many so called “sacred values” and politically correct lifestyle could cause psychological trauma to very large part of society.

Carlin is one of those rare people, whose performance can be watched for tens of times and you will not feel bored, you will always find something that you missed previous times, because his performance is overloaded with information and complicated thinking. Of course in performance of any comedian everyone, including myself, will always find something which seems to them as something they cannot completely agree with, but that has no meaning at all as far as we talk about useful time expenditure. Even if you don’t agree with everything he says, you will be involved in complicated mind play of arguments anyway. Another thing important to mention, is that most of comedians present us very easy going comedy – they mostly talk about everyday life situations and things that has no importance in our own life whatsoever. Carlin’s material if lacked humor, could bring some people to slight depression, since things he mostly talks about, concern our life in large proportions, if not directly, then indirectly we all are dealing with this huge amount of nonsense spreading in society.

Overall, my personal rating of George Carlin as you have guessed is 10/10. I would give him another 10 for always being himself with all his unpopular type of comedy despite opposite demand of comedy market.
