Sucker Punch (2011) review

Director of „Sucker Punch” is Zack Snyder. It is interesting how you can smell the identical scent of two different works from the same creator. After the first 15 minutes of watching suddenly I acknowledged how the style of the „Sucker Punch” reminds me „Watchmen”. Only after the end I found that Zack Snyder is also Director of „Watchmen”. This man definitely has talent of creating very, very tasteful and irreplaceable atmosphere and feeling of different reality, which in his case is some kind of mix of comics and mystique. Z. Snyder’s high professionalism is also proved by preservation of uniform style throughout the movie, which actually can be observed very rarely in this industry. But it also has to be said, that half of the credit for very enjoyable sense of parallel world goes to the perfect choice of soundtrack.

The story is about a girl, who is imprisoned in mental institution by her evil stepfather and how with the help of her imagination she is looking for the way out. Although fantasy movies nowadays are no more possible without the intervention of computer graphics, it is the biggest challenge. In my opinion the quality of computer graphics in “Sucker Punch” was the biggest disadvantage. I can’t say that it was unprofessional – it was not in the level of “Driven” or “Drive angry” cartoon level graphics, but evidently it was in the same level as the budget of the movie – somewhere in the middle. However the technology has not yet evolved so far that we could feel completely satisfied with the middle level – graphics in this level does not give you think of how skimpy were the producers, but still it has serious problems with simulation of gravity and there is clear recognition that it is animation rather than integration of reality.

Talking about acting, it is hard to emphasize any particular actor play, it is good that all the girls in the movie ( Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung ) didn’t give any priority to expose themselves, but were professionally dedicated to acting according to the requirements of role. I believe that Abbie Cornish (who looks like she could be sister of Nicole Kidman) by years will gain her popularity significantly, may be not so much due to acting, but due to her Hollywood eligible face – the idea was described in previous review, but probably you know what I mean anyway.

There are many viewers, who dislike “Sucker Punch” due to its strange form of telling the story, but if you don’t care about this peculiarity and if you are not against fantasy elements, it is very unlikely that you will not be emotionally satisfied. At the time of this review IMDb users rated “Sucker Punch” 6.5 out of 10. Putting aside my personal taste, I rate it at least 7.5/10.

I didn't like Watchmen. Thus, I am not sure if I will like this though I have a copy on hand. Shall watch it nonetheless. Nice review!
